Break in Rockhampton
Maria and I went to Rockhampton to visit her parents during the mid-semester break. Read on to find some photos of me and her, a dingo, a Japanese garden and a couple of cool little furballs!
Rockhampton is about 650 km north of Brisbane. By car it takes around 7-8 hours to get there; train takes you 7 hours and sets you back around $45 for a student ticket, while plane takes you an hour. Flying with Jetstar is the cheapest way to go and costs from $59.
Rockhampton is the Beef Capital of Australia. With two-million-plus cattle within 250 kilometres, the area probably boasts the highest beef density in the world. But despite all the cows, not much happens in Rocky!
Rockhampton has a fairly nice little business district with old, colonial-style buildings and a park along the river. There used to be a shopping street there as well. I suppose there still is one, in a sense... But in all its wisdom, the city council decided to tear the shopping street up and make car-parks there instead!
There is a surprisingly large botanic garden a little outside the city centre! You won't see the park coming until you're at the gates, and you won't be able to gauge the size of it until you walk around it. Among other things, it has a zoo, Japanese garden, bird enclosure, wetlands, playground, tropical fruits area and a cactus area. Best of all, it's totally free!!! Including the zoo!
Other than trotting around the botanic gardens, we went to the beach in Yeppoon for a swim, took Maria's dad's cars for a drive or two, played with Dud and Barney ("our" cats), and generally relaxed! For the first time in weeks, I actually slept for seven hours two nights in a row! :D (The last week, I've averaged around 4-5 hours per night! :S )
Hopefully it won't be too long until next time I get to go back there... (I must be one of the few people to ever say that about Rockhampton! :p ) Always good to visit my new family!
It's bedtime for me now... I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking! :o)
