Hotter than hell

Brisbane was hit by near record-breaking heat today. The quicksilver peaked into the 40s around mid-day!

With a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees, today was among the warmest February days in 100 years. The current record is 40.9 degrees and was set on February 21, 1925 - 79 years ago to the day.

Most people here spent the day in airconditioned houses or in front of big fans - or in desperate search for some cool air in shopping centers. The need for a cooling down was so great that some Brisbane suburbs saw temporary blackouts and water outages.

Maria and I spent the whole day walking around the shopping center at Indooroopilly - neither of us has airconditioning at our places. It was nice and cool at the shopping center, and it was really good to escape the startling heat outside. The only flipside was that thousands of others had the same idea as us. It was really hard to find a place to sit at all, and the movie theater (which has 16 cinemas) was filled to the rim. There were massive lines in front of the ticket booths and a 50 meter queue to get into the actual cinemas. We saw "Mona Lisa Smile" - a movie I wouldn't expect to find at the top of the box-office charts... But even the 1pm show, which we went to, was filled to the last seat!

The heat is forecast to last until Tuesday, when evening thunderstorms are set to cool things off a bit. Tomorrow we are looking at another scorcher - 39 degrees - while Monday is forecast to hit 36C. Tuesday will be rather chilly - just 31 degrees! :p

Aye... Send me some Norwegian snow!!! :o) How is the winter going back home???
